Connections between Word cards and Sentence cards
There are various connections between Word cards and Sentence cards.
Learn the words of a Sentence card
Most Sentence cards offer to add the individual words of the sentence.
- Add card to learning queue: This will add the selected word as a separate card to your learning queue.
- Word Details: With this option, you can view the Word Modal for the selected word, which displays a thesaurus entry, as well as translations of the word.
- Conjugation table: This will show the conjugation table for the selected word. Note that this is available for verbs only.
For conjugated words, we recommend to add the base form of the verb (see left screenshot).
You do not need to add all the words as separate cards. If you understand a few words, and want to learn the others, then add those you do not yet know.
But if you do not understand most of the words, it might be better to pick a few word courses to master basic vocabulary, or to just go on and learn the sentences Just Italian shows to you.
Example Sentences
Naturally, most words have more than one translation - but not always they mean exactly the same thing. Let's look at an example: let's translate the English word "seal" to Italian. Most dictionaries will tell you that it could be translated into one of the following Italian words:
- sigillo
- foca
But how to know which one to use?
The thing is that "seal" means two things in English:
- "The document was certified with a seal." - in this case, it is the emblem you put on a document or on a letter to certify its authenticity.
- "I saw a seal swimming in the ocean." - in this case, it is a marine mammal.
There are many similar situations when learning a language, and they can be difficult!
Luckily, Just Italian offers a solution:
As you can see, for each of the translations, an example sentence provides context.
- If you mean the emblem, you translate "the seal" with "il sigillo".
- If you mean the marine mammal, then it would be translated with "la foca".
It can be hard to remember such fine distinctions, but with Just Italian, you can practice them in context. The easiest way to never forget what "seal" means in Italian is by adding those example sentences to your learning queue.
Add Example Sentences
If you encounter an example sentence which you would like to practice specifically, these example sentences can be added as separate learning cards. Just tap the (+) button to the right of an example sentence.
For words you find difficult to learn, we recommend adding example sentences of the word as separate cards. That way, you get familiarized with the word in different contexts.
Moreover, if you practice that word in different contexts (as a separate word, and also in the context of example sentences), you will most likely never forget how to translate it.
